The delivery of drugs to the heart is an important treatment strategy for various heart diseases. Nano-carriers have shown increasing promise in targeted drug delivery systems. Researchers have developed a nano-particle that use a protein to attach to damage regions of arteries. This allows drug to directly get applied on damaged portions of artery.
Lab study on Mice have shown that using nano-particles, to target the delivery of the clot busting drug “tPA” can reduce the dosage of tPA needed, which may reduce possible side-effects, such as; Internal Bleeding. Tissue Plasminogen Activator (abbreviated tPA or PLAT) is a protein involved in the breakdown of blood clots. The clot busting drug was attached to a cluster of nano-particle that break apart in regions of turbulent blood flow.
The success of nano-carriers for delivering drugs to therapeutic sites in the heart mainly depends on specific target sites, appropriate drug delivery carriers and effective targeting ligands.
